Tony L has written this week about the difficulty in getting PN right and I think this wine exhibits exactly that. The colour is a good cherry, akin to those warmer climate PNs or those from NZ. But the flavours are not quite there. The fruit is a little lost and the finish a little astringent. My wife said she though this was Spanish in our "guess the wine competition," and maybe the "Rioja" style does not quite work with this variety. This wine will work much better with a meal, but if you want PN for drinking alone, pay a bit more and try something from New Zealand.
So far, my partner and I have liked or loved every single wine from Laithwaites. Finca Libertad is the first exception. It's incredibly harsh, acidic and forward, and quite the most unpleasant wine either of us have tasted for a long time. It went down the sink! At least full marks to Laithwaites for an excellent after-sales response.

I bought this wine as part of a mixed case, having read the label I opened it when we were eating a meal with a mushroom based sauce. It was great, good flavour, and complemented the meal beautifully. I am no wine critic, and simply go on what I found at the time. so I am not disagreeing with the harsh review before hand, just that like most pleasures in life, we all have different tastes and that's what make the world go round or at least what keeps so many wine producers in business. I like this wine, you might love it or dislike it.
If you were expecting a Burgundy style wine then forget it. This is harsh, "sour" and rather offensive to the palate leaving a particularly nasty after taste. It is remarkably consistent with the other wines I have tried bearing the Finca Libertad label, i.e. dreadful.
